Berry Picking @ Rowell's

I finally had my first berry picking excursion of the season. I met Hilary at the berry farm for some blueberry and raspberry picking. Now that we have moved away from Portland, we are really close to some amazing farms. This one was great and all for $1.25/lb!!

This was my final bounty after a few hours. Hilary probably picked 2x as much as I did but she was not picky.

Some raspberries not yet ready for picking but there were plenty for the taking. I am planning on making some raspberry vinegar one of these days.

Berries 09 - Let the pickin' begin

One of my favorite summer past times is picking berries. There is nothing like the full color and flavors of berries right off the bush. Yesterdays excursion yielded almost 12 lbs of blueberries and 5 lbs of raspberries.







One of my least favorite activities is patiently freezing the berries. But when it is done, it was well worth it.

Strawberry pickin' on Sauvie Island

After much anticipation, I finally made it out to pick some of these highly-regarded Oregon strawberries. It was a beautiful day and I was able to see Sauvie Island for the first time in all of its glory. Not only is it scenic, but they have u-pick berry farms for $1.75 a pound!
Since this was my first berry picking experience, I needed to learn the ropes. After about 5 minutes, I was in my groove. It is still pretty early in the season so there were a lot of not-so-ripe berries, but there were some gems to be found. Here are some photos of the berries and the busy patch.

This was really just a warm up for my favorite berry of all time - the BLUEBERRY! I can't wait for July.
